Last week (May 16-19, 2017), Bára Kubíčková and Renata Škovroňová together with other colleagues from RECETOX (Marek Pípal, Zuzka Nováková) attended JRC Summer School on Alternative Approaches for Risk assessment in the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra, Italy, which focused on comprehensive training on state-of-the-art alternative (non-animal) approaches to predictive toxicology and their use within modern chemical risk assessment practice. The program was very interesting, covering exposure assessment, hazard identification and characterisation, in vitro methods and computational modelling, validation principles and practice, and analysis of uncertainty. Bára and Renata also presented their posters on the effects of cyanobacterial toxins in in vitro models of human airway or renal epithelial cells: Kubíčková et al.: Cultured immortalized human airway epithelial cells - an in vitro approach to study cylindrospermopsin inhalation toxicity. Škovroňová et al.: Nephrotoxic potential of cyanobacterial toxins – in vitro study.

There are couple upcoming local events and lectures, where results of our research will be presented: "Ecotox" group seminar, Jan 31, 9AM, Lecture room RCX1, Pavilion A29, Campus Bohunice, Brno: Honza Raška will present about the recent ESTIV course on "Applied In Vitro Toxicology" he attended. Then, he is going to present about the study focusing on the effects of cyanobacterial toxins on the different types of hepatic cells obtained by in vitro differentiation of human embryonic stem cells. "Ecotox" group seminar, Feb 7, 9AM, Lecture room RCX1, Pavilion A29, Campus Bohunice, Brno: Lucka Čtveráčková will present about her completed Erasmus+ project at ISPA (Lecce, Italy), where she studied in vitro effects of extracts from the zooxanthellate jellyfish Cotylorhiza tuberculata on normal and transformed rat liver epithelial cell lines. Diploma thesis defence, Feb 8, 9AM, Lecture room RCX1, Pavilion A29, Campus Bohunice, Brno: Veronika Musilová will defend her M.Sc. degree thesis titled "Hepatotoxic and hepatocarcinogenic effects of chemicals in spheroid cell cultures". Doctoral Conference in Chemistry, Feb 10, 9AM-6:30PM, Rm#132, Pavilion A11, Campus Bohunice, Brno: Libor Jaša will present a poster on his research of passive sampling applications in monitoring of cyanobacterial toxins. Mark your calendars! Pavel BBC

During the last few days, I was attending the Central and Eastern European Conference on Health and Environment (CEECHE 2016) held in Prague, Czech Republic. This international conference gathered toxicologists, epidemiologists, physicians and environmental chemists from several countries, and focused primarily on the links between the environmental factors, toxic chemicals and their effects on human health. The program is available here, the detailed coverage is also on Twitter #CEECHE2016 or by tweets from Prof. A. Hoover (University of Kentucky). I was myself giving a talk about gap junctional intercellular communication: Babica,P., Sovadinova, I., Upham, B. (2016): Gap junctional intercellular communication: A biomarker for assessing environmental stressors and chemopreventive compounds, but RECETOX was heavily represented there, with Jana Lebedova, Onřej Mikeš, Lucie Bláhová and Lisa Melymuk having platform presentations, and many other RECETOX colleagues either presenting posters or being in the audience. Ondrej Adamovsky is visiting Salt Lake City, UT, where SETAC North America Meeting is taking place in between Nov 1-5, 2015. Members of SECANTOX group contributed to the experimental results of the study supervised by Ondra, which focused on immunomodulatory effects of cyanobacterial toxin microcystin-LR. A poster with a summary of the results will be presented at the conference: Adamovsky, O., Moosova, Z., Pekarova, M., Basu, A., Babica, P., Svihalkova-Sindlerova, L., Kubala, L., Blaha, L.: Immunomodulatory potency of an important water polluting cyanobacterial toxin. New York, New York ... and Cold Spring Harbor Lab meeting on Stem Cell Biology, Oct 7-11, 20157/10/2015 I have safely landed in New York City, where I am staying overnight. Tomorrow I'll be continuing to Long Island, which is a home of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL). CSHL is a world-recognized, private non-profit research institute, focusing on cell biology and genomics, cancer research, neuroscience and plant genetics. As you can find on Wikipedia, CSHL has been home to eight scientists who have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine:
This week, CSHL is organizing a conference on Stem Cell Biology, where I'll be presenting a poster: Babica, P. et al,: 3D in vitro model to study the role of adult human liver stem cells in the development of chronic diseases and toxicities. Pavel BBC Few pics from New York... Premek Mikula is heading to the traditional conference on Analytical Cytometry, which will be held in Olomouc, Czech Republic, between Oct 3-6, 2015. Premek will present a poster "Flowcytometry in Ecotoxicology: Interactions of Synthetic Biomimetic Polymers with Photoautotrophic Microorganisms", which was prepared in collaboration with Pavel Babica, Iva Sovadinova, Ludek Blaha and group of Prof. Kenichi Kuroda, University of Michigan.
