Premek Mikula is heading to the traditional conference on Analytical Cytometry, which will be held in Olomouc, Czech Republic, between Oct 3-6, 2015. Premek will present a poster "Flowcytometry in Ecotoxicology: Interactions of Synthetic Biomimetic Polymers with Photoautotrophic Microorganisms", which was prepared in collaboration with Pavel Babica, Iva Sovadinova, Ludek Blaha and group of Prof. Kenichi Kuroda, University of Michigan. Members of SECANTOX Research Group (Amrita Basu and Pavel Babica) contributed to a research study, which was just accepted for publication in Environmental Science and Technology journal. This study was a part of GACR research project "Immunomodulatory potencies of toxic cyanobacteria" supervised by Ondrej Adamovsky. The paper reports pro-inflammatory activity of cyanobacterial toxin microcystin-LR in a murine macrophage cell line, and for the first time indicates that microcystin effects in macrophages are probably mediated via activation of membrane toll-like receptors, independently of OATP-mediated cellular uptake of microcystins. Last Friday was officially the last day of the internship of Barbara Kubíčková, a visiting master's student from Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-University Greifswald, Germany. Bara completed her six-week internship, focused on the work with in vitro culture of rat liver progenitor cells WB-F344 transformed with myc oncogene. Bara did very nice job, characterizing proliferation of WB-myc cells in traditional 2D culture, both using fluorescence assays as well as real-time impedimetric measurements. In addition, she investigated ability of these cells to form spheroids and grow in 3D Petri Dish. Bara complemented these results with evaluation of metabolic activity of WB-myc spheroids and with assessment of gap junctional intercellular communication. Thank you, Bara, for your hard work, we hope to keep in touch and eventually further collaborate in the future! Pavel BBC
One-day workshop for experimental biologists, pharmacologists and toxicologists, life sciences researchers, and students at all levels of expertise focusing on “3R Alternatives in Toxicological and Pharmacological Testing" will be held at RECETOX, Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic, on Sep 24, 2015. Here you can read more information, check the program and register! !UPDATE - Pictures from "3R Workshop"! Pavel BBC
"The 1st World Congress on Electroporation and Pulsed Electric Fields in Biology, Medicine and Food & Environmental Technologies" will be held in Portoroz, Slovenia, on Sep 6-10, 2015. Our collaborators from Prof. Juergen Kolb group at Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology, INP Greifswald, will present some results of our joint research focusing on biological effects of nanosecond pulsed electric field (nsPEF). A. Steuer will talk about effects of nsPEF on gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) in normal rat liver epithelial cells (Anna Steuer et al.: Effects of nanosecond pulsed electric fields on cell-cell communication in a monolayer), P. Macikova will present a poster on the effects of nsPEF on GJIC and markers of tumorigenicity in transformed rat liver epithelial cells (Petra Macikova et al: Changes in tumorigenic markers in rat liver oval cells in response to nsPEFtreatment). The full program of the conference is here. Pavel BBC
Check out the pics of our poster presenters from "Creating Life in 3D" conference (Brno, CZ, Sep 2-4, 2015). Respecting the conference topic, they stayed all alive and three-dimensional during the poster session! Pavel BBC Another conference involving members and collaborators of SECANTOX research group starts in Brno tomorrow. Conference "Chemistry and Life 2015" is organized by Brno University of Technology, Faculty of Chemistry. Our RECETOX colleague, Dr. Premysl Mikula, will present the first results of our collaboration with Prof. Kenichi Kuroda (University of Michigan), with a poster reporting new types of biological activity of synthetic antimicrobial polymers developed in Kuroda lab. A conference "Frontiers in Material and Life Sciences: Creating Life in 3D" organized by CEITEC/ICRC starts in Brno tomorrow, on Wednesday, Sep 2. SECANTOX research group will be represented there by six posters prepared by our Ph.D. students: Amrita Basu et al.: Optimized protocol for high-throughput toxicity testing in 3D spheroid cultures Ondrej Brozman et al.: Effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in human bronchial epithelial cell line Lucie Ctverackova et al.: Assessment of cell properties of normal and transformed rat liver progenitor cells in 2D and 3D culture Aneta Dydowiczova et al.: Automatic image analysis of 3D spheroids in toxicological research Jan Raska et al.: Human adult liver progenitor cells – a novel model for in vitro hepatotoxicity assessment Affiefa Yawer et al.: In vitro co-culture model to study paracrine signaling between Leydig and Sertoli Cells You can read and download the abstract book here. Hello everyone, this is the first attempt to create a website of a research group nicknamed "SECANTOX", which is a part of Ecotoxicology Division at RECETOX, Masaryk University. The group is headed by Dr. Pavel Babica & Dr. Iva Sovadinova, and represents more-or-less informal assembly of researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, who focus on the effects of various factors, mostly environmental and food toxicants, on the biological processes maintaining tissue homeostasis. We are particularly interested in the role of adult stem cells in the onset and development of chemically induced toxicities and chronic diseased states. The website so far contains only fragments of information, but I'll try to keep up with updating and filling with more information. Pavel BBC
